Phonics

Phonics
Phonics help children with their reading and spelling. It is one way of teaching children to read quickly and skillfully.

Phonics help children:

 recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;

 identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’; and

 blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.

Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.

Early Years use Phonics Shed in the initial stages of learning to read with phonics. KS1 continue with this scheme and then from year 2 to year 6 we follow the Spelling Shed scheme.

The booklet below explains all about the Phonics Shed programme.
