Writing is an integral part of our curriculum. All children from Early Years to Year 6 are taught writing skills and are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their skills across the curriculum and beyond school. It is our intention that children develop a clear understanding of the writing process in order to establish themselves as an author in their own right. Through our quality text led curriculum, we foster children’s interest in writing and offer a reason and context for writing which enables the children to write for purpose and audience. Children are taken on a writing journey which builds their knowledge of writing for context and purpose and provides the opportunities for the children to explore a variety of genres, planning, drafting and re-drafting their writing. In order to establish this, children will develop their knowledge of genre features, audience, language and effective composition.

We believe that proof reading and editing is extremely important. There are so many elements to writing and it can take many years for all of these to come together at the same time. Through proof reading and editing the children have the chance to change specific elements of their writing by focusing on one element at a time. All authors proof read and edit and we encourage this from the start. For many children reading their writing aloud helps them to edit and we often see children reading their work to each other. We also provide the chance for children to revisit texts they have previously written to improve them and create a writing portfolio.

We want our children to appreciate that writing is a journey and that it starts with real life experiences where possible and rich vocabulary through reading quality texts and ends with being published for an audience.

We encourage our children at Bolney to write for pleasure and offer creative writing workshops as well as regular author visits where possible.
